| lory | Lately I have had weirder than normal (for me) chest activity. Right before going to sleep or while I'm asleep, it feels like and electric shock going thru it takes a split second. Sometimes I wonder did that really happen. Also right before I go to sleep, it feels like a rubberband vibrating or some kind of vibration deep down in me. I know everyone has their own way of describing symptoms. This used to freak me out and now it makes me angry. I have no solutions for these. Alot of the other symptoms have decreased alot thru diet, vitamins and exercise. Reading sites like these help so much. Thanks for listening |
| Bebee | hi lory, I've had that also. I get it mainly in my arms and legs. The reason I had it was from withdrawal from anti depressants. I still get it occasionally but have no idea what its from. Skipped beats feel like you're heart stops for a second, and then restarts. It's like a short pause between beats. |
| Miranda | I also get this. It feels like a bolt of lightening going through my body starting at my chest. It only happens to me when I lie down. I just ignore it as I try to with everything else. All the symtoms associated with this are annoying, aggrevating and could drive one batty if they let them. I have been checked from head to toe and every test comes up the same "normal." Just know you are not alone with all this and you can come here for some reasurance and support!!!. |
| Happyface | I have had these split second electric shocks (not the vibration though) (not yet anyways and hopefully not) when I'm either just falling asleep or when I wake up (I'm not sure which) on a few occations that lasts for about 4 to 5 nights in the past 4 months and I don't sleep well on those nights, I seem to fall asleep and wake up often. I have always been a good sleeper all the time. I have not been diagnosed with MVP yet but have so many symptoms the same as alot of the people here. I'm on my way to finding this out one of these days. I am finding out so much here, it's great. I have already been changing my diet, more water intake, exercises etc. (Thanks Miranda) Many good advices from all of you. It is very reassuring to hear that others feel things that I feel. Thank you for your post. Calm sleep, sweet dreams tonight. Happyface. |
| arno | To me I felt like there is a jolt in the heart and sudden emptiness followed by gasping for air. After that for some 10 minutes or so I will feel dizzy and cold sweats around my face and feel cold feet and hands. Normally laying on the bed is the best option I will feel better after that. There were times though when the feeling I described never subside even after laying flat for hours. Now I realised it is caused by mutiple heart beat misses. Twice already I was rushed to the emergency room given some inter vienous medication and discharge after hours in the intensif care unit. Very scary but we know it is not dangerous so I have to learn to live with it. |
| Gabriel | I've noticied I get 3 different types of "skips" or "flutters", which I've broken down into the following highly technical terms 1: "The bellyflop". This one feels as if the wind has been knocked out of you while your stomach does a flip at the same time. 2: "The jolt". Feels as if hit by a sudden jolt of electricity, causing a strange and sudden vibrating sensation around the chest area. 3: "The elastic band". The heart magically morphs itself into the consistancy of elastic, stretches itself, then lets itself go with an extremely palpable "twang!". |
| Matty | I wonder if the jolts may have something to do with a surge of estrogen. Are any of you premenapausal? One can start milder symptoms in the late thirties and early forties. Matty------------------

| lory | I think the peri menopause has alot to do with it, this time for me it seemed to last longer than usual. This MVPS and menopause have alot of the same symptom and thank goodness alot of the same solutions. Thanks to everyone who replied and gave me their experiences and the descriptions of the "electric shock" I described. Also in another of the Symptoms Discussions I can't remember the heading, but it talked about magnesium and there was a link availiable. I read it and realized I had not been taking my magnesium like I should. I had halfed it for some reason. Anyway I went back to 1200 mg a day and haven't had that shock since. Also my period is over. On this link it talked about the things I had first posted about. I'll keep reading and learning. Thanks |
| basia | Oh, my gosh! I get that vibrating rubber band sensation in my chest also. My mom used to complain about it too, only she said it felt like when you're trying to start an engine that's dying--you know, that rrrr, rrrr thing. I used to think what she was saying was so weird, but now I know--yes it's weird!!! But it's real!! Basia P.S. I'm new to this site, but not to MVP. | Nervous-in-TN | The only kind I've experienced are like this: I feel a slight "catch" in my chest/throat area, and I kind of lose my breath for about a second, my heartrate slows down and beats hard for about 2-3 beats, then goes back to normal. The first time I experienced this was 4 years ago, and the first time it happened it was pretty strong, and the feeling of losing my breath was strong. It also made me dizzy and lightheaded for a few moments. Now, since I've been on medication for a year and a half (and I guess because I'm more used to it happening), the episodes are maybe one or two a week and are weak compared to my first ones. Also, now when it happens, I cough and it helps them pass quickly. |
| Erika | The kind I get are the quick, snapping ones in the chest that make me catch my breath, and the other is the fluttery ones, like quick butterfly wings. I get the electric jolt feeling when I am just dozing off the sleep or when I am listening to a relaxation cd, I seem to think at least for me, that it comes from my nervous system, discharging a bit as I am slowly relaxing. I have also had the type that when I fall asleep a second later I wake up gasping for air, and that for me I can relate during stressful times I do my relaxation cd and it seems to be the same, discharing of my nervous system. Your not alone, that's for sure!!! |
| TES | Well, it certainly is nice to know that I'm not the only one out there who gets "charged" at night. My charges start in my heard and work its way down to my chest. I have had these since 1986. Several in my family have them also. Usually I get them when I'm almost asleep in a twilight type sleep or just relaxing. It's just something I've had to accept and dealt with. I was diagnosed with MVP 12 years ago. The heart skipping can be very scary. I first noticed this about a year ago when I was taking an over the counter drug for my cold. Also when I get rapid heart beats I have discovered if I take a few slow deep breaths, it causes the beats to become regular again. Hope I helped someone out there. |
| angie | i cant say my skipped beats feel like butterlies fluttering in my chest because I think of butterflies as mild little things. Mine feel more like a bunch of rubbber balls all rolling around especially up into my throat then all of a sudden they stop - I catch my breath - and then they roll again. My Holter Monitor showed very frequent PVC's and I guess I felt every one of them - but then I started taking Atenolol and I haven't had any. I LOVE ATENOLOL! |
| liaroma | wow!! Scarry...I was diganosed with MVP when I was in elementry school. I am now 36 and having some problems. I have these "shocks" too but mine seem to be when I put my feet down and go through my arms and legs. It's really an awful feeling for me. I also have times where it's like I can not catch my breath and I have to just wait until it comes and then it is as if the air is coming from deep inside and heavy, not typical shallow breathing. Anyone feel this way? Lina |
